There are many situations that create stress in our lives, but there may be few events as stressful in a college student’s life as that period between finishing final exams and waiting for grades to be posted, especially if you’re anxiously waiting to see whether your grade makes or breaks your GPA or grade in a class. That kind of tension can wear you down and, if left unrelieved, can ultimately affect your physical health. It’s important to continue destressing even after the school year is over. Here are a few ways to relax, get your mind off of those grades, and reduce your stress levels.

Certainly, you should be getting plenty of physical activity anyway, but it can be difficult to find time when you’re stressed out and in college. In addition to benefiting your physical health, exercise boosts your mood and relieves stress levels. Physical activity causes the brain to release endorphins, those “feel good” neurotransmitters, which give you that natural high.

Binge your favorite television show

Another good way to reduce stress and forget about your own problems is to lose yourself in a fantasy world. Choose a show that makes you feel good and spend some time living vicariously through your favorite characters. You’ll be entertained, have something to discuss with your friends, and can forget about your stress for a bit.

Take a walk

Researchers have recently found that just being outdoors can improve our emotions and benefit an individual’s overall mental health. Achieve those benefits and get a little exercise by going for a walk in your favorite park or along the beach. The fresh air and solitude can certainly help you relax.

Get a good laugh

There may not be a better way to eliminate stress than by getting a good, hearty laugh at something. The effects of having a good laugh can last long after your laughter subsides, so don’t be afraid to let loose. Indulge in your favorite comedy films or head out to see live stand-up. Comics also post their performances online, so a Google search might turn up something hilarious.

Listen to your favorite music

Music a great way to relieve stress and get more relaxed. Put on your favorite feel-good music and take some time to unwind. Or, check out other people’s playlists to discover new music. You can listen to music anywhere and it’s a great way to take your mind off of stress.

These are just a few suggestions and they may not work for everyone. The important thing is to take some time for yourself and engage in activities that help you relax. Similarly, doing things that make you feel good can also have a positive effect on your stress levels. Don’t worry about those grades. They’ll be there when you get back.
